Scrap-Baggers! Ten thousand thanks to Rachel Fichtenbaum, who contacted me with more Scrap-Bagger information than I got from Orchard House. Here's a blurb with additional information on the junior society of The Orchard House. The Scrap-Baggers is a youth membership society of Orchard House. Subscribers get free admission to Orchard House, discounts on special Orchard House programs, and a free quarterly publication. (Interested adults are welcome to join and receive the newsletter, but for discounts and free tours, adults must join an adult membership society at Orchard House.) The publication includes articles on the Alcotts and related themes as well as recipes, games, poems, and creative writing. Most of the writing is done by the Junior Volunteers of Concord, which is a group of young people interested in Louisa, her family, and her town, but contributions from subscribers are also welcome and are a regular feature. (Interested subscribers can send pieces to Scrap-Baggers at Orchard House, P.O. Box 343, Concord, MA 01742, USA.) Each of the four yearly issues centers on a specific theme. For example, one issue focused on May Alcott Nieriker, who was Louisa's youngest sister and the prototype for Amy March. Articles focused on many different topics, including the following: May's horse, May's room at Orchard House, various artists who influenced May or whom May knew, a book May published, May's relationship with the Emerson family, one of May's humiliating experiences, May's art studio, an encouraging note from Mrs. Alcott to May, the various portrayals of Amy in various Little Women videos, Maria Mitchell, and Mary Cassatt. The issue also includes three games, three pieces of creative writing, two synopses of stories by Louisa and relating to May, a poem about an artistic dilemma, an article about the Junior Volunteer program, and a contribution from a subscriber.
