Many times people send e-mail with the same questions. This document is an attempt to
answer those questions without making people wait.
Before you send e-mail, please
review this document. If you e-mail a question that's already been answered in this
document, you may not receive a reply.

This Web site has several links to online biographies.
Orchard House at http://www.louisamayalcott.org
also has extensive biography information.
2. I
have a copy of a certain book by LMA. How much it it worth?
Beats me. I am not a rare book collector.
3. What's the best book by LMA?
Geez. Ask me an easy one, why don't ya. Let's see.. the most often-mentioned book is
Little Women, of course, and I guess you could say that's her best children's book (though
a strong case could be made for An Old-Fashioned Girl.) Her best non-children's book is a
more ambiguous prospect. Hospital Sketches is a great book, as is Behind a Mask. (Is
Behind a Mask a book or a novella?) But I guess I'd have to give the prize to A Modern
Mephistopheles, which is a mean, scary book. It also shows the ability of an author in her
prime who is writing more for the heck of it than for money. (The book was originally
published under a pseudonym.)

Um, no. Sorry. I'll be happy to help you kick around ideas for your term paper, or give
you a boost if you're stuck, something like that, but I'm not going to write your paper
for you.
5. I
want to use one of the pictures on this site. Can I get your permission?
No, because they're not my pictures! The picture most people ask me about is of
"young Louisa," who's on the upper left hand part of the home page. That picture
is there by the gracious permission of Orchard House, the Alcott museum. Please contact
Orchard House and ask them about it.
I have three pictures in my picture gallery that came from the Detroit Publishing Company
Collection at the Library of Congress. They are of Orchard House. There are apparently no
copyright restrictions on these photos, according to http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/detroit/detres.html
.
As I add pictures from library holding collections I will include information on their
copyright situations.
5b.
I want to use one of the stories you scanned in. Can I get your permission?
The stories I've scanned in (as opposed to the newspaper stories and
other items which are not written by LMA and were posted by permission)
are, as far as I know, out of copyright. Therefore you don't need my
permission to put them on your own Web site. However, the stories took a
lot of time and effort to put online. I would appreciate it if you link
back to this site when you use the stories.
In the cases of story annotation, the annotation is mine and is under
copyright. Do not use annotated stories without my permission, please.

7. What happened to Lulu?
Louisa May Nieriker (Lulu) was the only child of Abigail May Alcott. She was born in
Europe in 1879; six weeks later Abigail died. Abby had requested before her death that the
child be sent to Concord to live with Louisa May Alcott.
That's what happened. LMA acted as Lulu's guardian until 1888, when LMA died. After that,
Lulu returned to Europe to live under her father's care. In 1903 she married Emil Franz
Rasim. She died in 1975 at the age of 96.
8. What can I do to support
AlcottWeb?
This site was built to help students and teachers by providing a central repository of
Internet information about Louisa May Alcott. While it's understood that nothing can
substitute for a trip to the library, it is hoped that eventually this site will serve as
a companion to a library trip, and hopefully provide useful information in and of itself.
Though the site has been open since August 97 I do not feel the goal has yet been met.
The point is that AlcottWeb is non-profit, and shall remain non-profit. Enjoy it;
that's all I ask. If you've gotten something worthwhile from it and wish to balance out
your Karma, go do something nice for somebody. If you really really want to do
something, join Orchard House.

Thanks, but no thanks. AlcottWeb is a non-profit endeavor. As long as I
can afford it, AlcottWeb will be run without banner ads, affiliate
programs, and all that kind of stuff.
9. What is your privacy policy?
Many people have written asking about this site's privacy policy, so here goes:
AlcottWeb collects no personal information. It does not use cookies, registration, or any
other such method to gather information about visitors. I do monitor the server logs to
determine which pages are most popular, but that's all.
